Chester-le-Street Theatre Group was established in 1982, and this group of enthusiastic amateur thespians have been performing a wide variety of shows since, entertaining the people of Chester-le-Street and County Durham for over 25 years. The choice of the title "Theatre Group" was long thought and deliberate, the founder members wishing to choose a title which did not suggest the group was only dedicated to one genre of performance. As a consequence the group feel they can tackle any project that takes their fancy, straight play or musical, comedy or drama.

The group diversified in 1990 by establishing a Junior Section which has gone from strength to strength and now has a membership of 50  under 18 year olds performing musical theatre to the sheer delight of audiences twice a year. The Junior Section currently has a waiting list to join in excess of 100 youngsters. The Juniors efforts were rewarded in 2004 by the award of the Chester-le-Street District Council's Young Achievers Team Award.

In 2007 the society celebrated it's 25th Anniversary with an Anniversary Ball held on the evening of March 9th. It was a spectacular event, enjoyed by many members both past and present. Click here for more details.

The Society was, in 2007, proud to announce that Actor Colin Baker had agreed to become the group's new President.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Society held on March 7th 2008 the decision was made to expand the scope of the group further with the institution of the Graduate Section. A long held dream of the society's longest serving Junior member, Nick White, it is intended that the Graduate Section will draw on the enthusiasm and commitment of those Junior members who still hold the desire to perform. The Graduate Section's inaugural production will be performed in August 2008.

The society meet weekly, on Friday evenings, for rehearsals at the Chester-le-Street Community Association Centre, Newcastle Bank, Chester-le-Street. Learn more about us by following the links below:
